Arabic Calligraphy

Arabic calligraphy has several different styles, but two important ones are Thuluth and Kufic.

  • Thuluth is a more flowing and decorative style, with curved letters and a lot of movement. It was often used for religious writing, especially in mosques and Qur’anic inscriptions.
  • Kufic is one of the older styles of Arabic writing and is much more angular and geometric. It was commonly used in early Qur’anic manuscripts and on buildings.
    • Basically, Kufic looks more straight and structured, while Thuluth is more curved and decorative.
